Avast! Home Edition is a great free solution to basic anti-virus and anti-spyware needs. The detection database updates regularly, and will catch most of the common nasties out there. However, it does miss some lesser-known viruses and its heuristics scanning isn't quite what VIPRE antivirus offers. If you have slightly sensitive data, we would suggest with at least a basic antivirus like Avast! Home Edition.
